Course Introduction

 Concrete Technology

This course will provide engineers, architects, technologists, and field inspectors with a comprehensive understanding of modern concrete technology, covering all aspects from mixture design, to transporting, to handling, to curing to field control tests and on-site performance. Students will also take home soft copies of the chapters and presentations summarizing each chapter.

Course Objectives

  •     Understand the fundamentals of concrete composition and properties.
  •     Identify the types and roles of Portland, blended, and other hydraulic cements.
  •     Analyze the use of supplementary cementitious materials.
  •     Evaluate the significance of mixing water, aggregates, and admixtures in concrete performance.
  •     Recognize the applications of fibers, fiber-reinforced concrete, and air-entrained concrete.
  •     Apply principles of concrete mixture design and proportioning for various construction needs.
  •     Demonstrate knowledge of batching, mixing, transporting, and handling concrete mixtures effectively.
  •     Explain techniques for placing, finishing, and curing concrete under different conditions.
  •     Address challenges of hot-weather concreting and volume changes in concrete.
  •     Conduct field control tests to assess quality and performance of concrete.
  •     Explore the properties and applications of high-performance and special types of concrete.
  •     Integrate modern concrete technology practices into real-world field inspection and project management
