Course Introduction

Major shutdowns and turnarounds create a concentrated period in which organizations must complete large volumes of maintenance, inspection, repair, and modification work while critical assets are unavailable for normal operation. A poorly defined scope, late materials, unrealistic schedules, uncontrolled additional work, contractor coordination problems, or delayed equipment handover can quickly extend downtime and increase costs. Successful performance therefore depends on decisions made long before the shutdown begins as well as disciplined control during execution.

Boost Consulting & Training offers this course to develop the practical capabilities required to plan, prepare, execute, and control major maintenance shutdowns and turnarounds. The program covers scope development, work prioritization, readiness, scheduling, resources and contractors, materials, execution control, emerging work, progress monitoring, handover, restart, and post-turnaround learning.

Participants work through realistic scenarios where schedule, scope, resources, cost, and asset readiness must be managed simultaneously.

The main concept of this course is to treat a shutdown or turnaround as a tightly controlled maintenance event in which scope, readiness, execution, and restart must remain aligned to achieve the required work within the available outage window.

Course Objectives

  • Define and control the maintenance scope of a shutdown or turnaround.
  • Prioritize work according to asset criticality and outage opportunity.
  • Assess readiness before equipment is taken out of service.
  • Develop realistic schedules around work dependencies and resource constraints.
  • Coordinate internal teams, contractors, materials, tools, and specialist services.
  • Control additional and emerging work during shutdown execution.
  • Monitor progress and respond to schedule deviations and execution bottlenecks.
  • Manage handover, restart, closeout, and post-turnaround performance review.
