Course Introduction

Biodiversity—the variety of life on Earth—is fundamental to human well-being, economic stability, and environmental resilience. Ecosystems provide essential services that support food security, clean water, health, livelihoods, and climate regulation. However, accelerating biodiversity loss driven by human activity has created significant risks to societies, economies, and long-term sustainability.

In response to these global challenges, BOOST has developed the Biodiversity and Human Well-Being course for professionals who already have a basic understanding of environmental or sustainability concepts and wish to deepen their knowledge of the relationship between biodiversity and human systems. This intermediate-level program focuses on understanding how biodiversity underpins social and economic well-being, and how policies, organizations, and communities can manage biodiversity risks and opportunities more effectively.

The course emphasizes an integrated perspective, linking ecological systems with public health, livelihoods, development planning, and environmental governance. Participants explore how biodiversity considerations are increasingly embedded in sustainability strategies, climate responses, and development frameworks.

Through structured discussions, applied examples, and interdisciplinary analysis, participants strengthen their ability to assess biodiversity impacts, contribute to informed decision-making, and support initiatives that protect ecosystems while enhancing human well-being.
